Geological Consulting has supported Stantec on several New Zealand dam safety projects. They have provided desktop studies and site investigations; where a good understanding of the local geology, dam and foundation materials, instrumentation, and wider dam safety issues including flooding, internal erosion and seismicity has been required. They have consistently exceeded expectations in terms of technical delivery, programme, safety, and end-client satisfaction.

Mackintosh and Tullabardine Dams – Safety Review
SMEC engaged Geological Consulting to undertake a review of the engineering geology of Mackintosh Dam and Tullabardine Dam, Tasmania. The review formed part of the overall dam safety review and comprehensive risk assessment being undertaken by SMEC.
Mackintosh Dam is an approximately 75 m high concrete-faced rockfill dam with a crest length of 465 m. Tullabardine Dam is an approximately 25 m high saddle dam, also of concrete-faced rockfill construction. The dams share a free-overflow concrete spillway, with an unlined rock chute. The dams were constructed in the early 1980s. The dams have variable foundation conditions which include both soils (glacial and fluvioglacial deposits) and rock.
