Dam engineering expertise

Established in 2019, Geological Consulting is a specialist dam geology consultancy. We complete site and office-based assignments at all stages of the project life cycle, for a wide variety of clients, throughout Asia Pacific.

At every step, we go about business in a way that shows dedication to our technical excellence and effective communication style.

Investigation and design

Geological investigations, drilling in dams, 2D and 3D engineering geological models (EGMs), foundation and construction material characterisation, and engineering geological analysis.

Construction

Geological mapping of foundations and excavations. Supervision of foundation preparation and treatment, grouting, drainage drilling, slope stabilisation, and earthworks.

Operation

Dam Safety Reviews (DSR), Failure Mode Effects Analysis (FMEA), Comprehensive Risk Assessment (CRA) and Portfolio Risk Assessment (PRA).

Review

Peer review, Panel of Experts (POE), due diligence and expert witness.

Matt Shore – Principal Engineering Geologist

Our team

With over 20 years of experience, Matt is a Chartered Engineering Geologist specialising in the investigation, design, and construction of dams and their appurtenant structures. His experience includes new dams and dam upgrades, for all dam types. Matt has successfully contributed to projects across New Zealand, Australia, Fiji, Samoa, the Philippines, the Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, and Qatar. He has the proven ability to collaborate with multidiscipline teams and lead them to achieve project objectives.

Matt is a Chartered Member (CMEngNZ (PEngGeol)) of Engineering New Zealand (ENZ). He is an active member of both the New Zealand Society on Large Dams (NZSOLD) and the Australian National Committee on Large Dams (ANCOLD).

Who we work with

We work with owners, consultants, contractors, regulators, financers, insurers, and government agencies.

We also complete pro bono assignments within our discipline as much as possible, and we have a passion for improving the lives of people in developing countries.

We’re a small company so have a high level of flexibility with how we collaborate and deliver work.

Where we work

We complete both site and office-based assignments.

Our core business is in Australia and New Zealand, but we work throughout Asia Pacific. We have completed projects in Fiji, Samoa, the Philippines, the Solomon Islands, PNG, Vanuatu and Qatar. We consider projects located anywhere in the world on a case by case basis.

We have completed dam projects in most geological environments, ranging from glacial conditions in New Zealand and Tasmania, to the tropics of the Asia Pacific and the deserts of Qatar.
