Geological Consulting has supported Stantec on several New Zealand dam safety projects. They have provided desktop studies and site investigations; where a good understanding of the local geology, dam and foundation materials, instrumentation, and wider dam safety issues including flooding, internal erosion and seismicity has been required. They have consistently exceeded expectations in terms of technical delivery, programme, safety, and end-client satisfaction.

Cania Dam – 20-year Safety Review
Cania Dam is located on Three Moon Creek, approximately 40km northwest of Monto, QLD. Constructed between 1977 and 1982, the dam comprises an approximately 55m high clay core rockfill embankment with a 350m crest length. The spillway is located 850m from the dam, and comprises an approach channel, free-overflow control structure and an unlined spillway chute. Other infrastructure includes an approximately 45m high intake tower, outlet conduit through the dam abutment and valve house.
Stantec Australia Pty Ltd engaged Geological Consulting to undertake the geological review. Key considerations for the safety review included the kinematic stability of the dam foundation and abutments, rock erodibility of the spillway chute, and characteristics of the used construction materials.
