Geological Consulting has supported Stantec on several New Zealand dam safety projects. They have provided desktop studies and site investigations; where a good understanding of the local geology, dam and foundation materials, instrumentation, and wider dam safety issues including flooding, internal erosion and seismicity has been required. They have consistently exceeded expectations in terms of technical delivery, programme, safety, and end-client satisfaction.

Awoonga Dam – Spillway Upgrade Project
Engineering geologist for the concept and preliminary design of the service spillway upgrade of Awoonga Dam, an approximately 55 m high CFRD. The service spillway comprises a 110 m wide and 15 m concrete gravity control structure, a concrete-lined chute, and a dissipator.
The geological scope of work included reviewing existing information, new investigations, and the development of 2D and 3D engineering geological model (EGM). An important part of the work was the review, standardisation and modernisation of the pre-existing information. This information had been collected over an approximately 60-year period, by different organisations, using different standards. New investigations included drilling from the internal gallery, through the dam body, and into its foundation. The critical geological considerations for the project are the potential for failure through the rock foundation of the spillway control structure and for erosion initiating downstream of the dissipator and head cutting back towards the spillway control structure.
